The story sets place in 5 places: In the Car- where the start of the story sets place. this is where we get to know of the main and major characters. Here,
the main character is not yet revealed. The Hotel, City and Train- The hotel is where the have dinner with Routh. In this scene we get a sense of the wealthy
and powerful lifestlye. This part is essentially important to the story because we view the admiration Jimmy has for
these influential and rich people. We see this as they had an elegant dinner at the hotel and when they were walking
through the city people even made way for them. It also gets the point of their wealth across most people in Ireland
can not afford these means of transportation. The Boat- this is the last and probably the setting and scene that shows the theme and message that the author wants
to get across. The scene again gives a sense that they are leading a very rich lifestyle. It is also when the true colors
of the characters come to life as we see the 'friends' of Jimmy deceive him.
Analysis of the settings:
the settings of the story basically serves the same purpose. They all basically show the lifestyle that the rich and
powerful lead. With this, the author is able to give the reader the reason of why people idolize and envy these type of
people.
The seeting is very effective as it portrays the wealth of the men as during the early 1900's transportation was expensive and the character use many forms of transport. I liked the settings as Joyce uses realistic places such as "Stephen's Green" and "Dame street". Joyce assumes the reader is familliar with these Dublin streets and in turn the reader enters Joyce's comfort zone of his home.
